Key Layers of Interior Lighting

Lighting is an often overlooked element that can truly bring a room to life. Not only does it illuminate the space, it sets the mood and can determine how the rest of your design concept is perceived. To create the most aesthetically pleasing lighting display, consider a layered lighting approach—every room in your home should include a source of ambient, task, and accent lighting.

Ambient Lighting

This first layer of lighting provides the overall illumination of a room. You might also hear this term referred to as “general lighting”. The natural light from your windows, chandeliers, pendants, and flush mounts are usually the biggest contributors to this category of lighting.

Task Lighting

Task lighting is used to illuminate a specific function in the space.. Before purchasing light fixtures for a room, consider what tasks you will be performing within that room. Whether you’re applying makeup in the bathroom or following a recipe in the kitchen, it’s important to think about what lighting will help you complete these tasks.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is the last layer of lighting that really polishes off a look and defines the overall mood. Accent lighting is a great way to emphasize a certain object, such as artwork or a key piece of furniture. While this is primarily a decorative element, it can also be used to add additional light to a room. Consider using wall sconces as an accent light source to accentuate certain areas of the room, and don’t be afraid to add accent lighting to every room!

Start thinking in layers when you’re lighting your home and see how much of a profound difference it can make in your overall design concept.
