Creating a Mid-Century Beauty—The Sophia

In this post, Arhaus Interior Designer Julia Hansberger shares her inspiration and finished designs created for Lennar, one of America’s leading homebuilders. In the future, Julia will be highlighting her experiences partnering with Lennar to design model homes from coast to coast. This post, which features Lennar’s mid-century-inspired Sophia home, is the first in the series.

When designing a model home, we always try to picture who will live there. Sophia is made for a chic couple buying their first home, or a couple who’s buying a home after their nest has emptied.  I wanted to showcase how versatile Arhaus furniture and décor can be, so our team dreamed up what Arhaus might look like in the mind of a stylish, mid-century buyer. Our Bryden Sectional seemed the obvious place to start building our design.

The inspiration behind the Sophia project was “Palm Desert Coachella” meets “a suite at the Hard Rock Vegas.” We brought the rock-and-roll vibe to life throughout the home using pieces like our Sullivan Media Storage and Desk, our Lincoln Bed in stunning green, and our amazing Deco Diamond Wallpaper in black and white.

Once the design team came up with our inspiration, we got to work designing the home’s main living area. I like to think of this area as the heart of the home, and, as they say, the heart pumps the blood to the rest of the body. From there, we add one statement piece per room, choose the lighting, and decide what the walls will look like.

Sophia Model Main Living Area

Whenever we begin a project, I try to step into the mind of the person who will be living in the space. I start my design with a piece I love from our latest product launch, and experiment with styles that may not be in my own home. I love adding statement wallpaper, and try to incorporate a little into every model’s design.

The Sophia project was like theater for me. I had dreamed up a wall treatment that used metallics and greens, hoping it would resemble snakeskin. We did it, and honestly… it looked too much like the real thing! So we shifted our plans and painted that wall instead, adding our Sorcha Mirror for the perfect finishing touch. Lesson learned… sometimes less is more.
